![]() Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu useful for self defense? Expert trainers agree, Jiu Jitsu, specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is the worlds most effective martial art for self defense training. Unlike other martial arts, BJJ is an art that relies on grappling techniques that use efficient movement and leverage to defeat a larger, stronger opponent. Although their are no striking techniques (such as punching or kicking) in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, fighters learn to apply finishing moves known as "submission holds" which have the ability to end a fight in seconds. Whether you are looking to train for sport or self defense, training in Jiu Jitsu is a must. How did BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) prove itself as the most effective form of combat known to man? In the 1900's the Gracie family developed this amazing art in Brazil, learning Judo and Wrestling from Mitsuyo Maeda who was a leading Kodokan Judo player. Helio Gracie took his teachings and modified them to allow a smaller, weaker individual such as himself to defeat larger, stronger attackers. To differentiate this new style of martial art created by Helio and Carlson Gracie they created the name Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (sometimes also known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu). To prove the effectiveness of this new fighting style, Helio and his family members challenged all of the area's martial arts schools to a limited-rules contest known as Vale Tudo. The terms of the matches were very simple, only two rules were followed, no biting and no eye gouging. During these Vale Tudo matches no other style was effective or as dominant as the newly created Jiu Jitsu. Every challenge match resulted in the same outcome. Challengers would try to strike using their outdated and often ineffective martial arts. Gracie family members would quickly close the gap, clinch and take their opponent down to the floor. From there, they gained a dominant position, displayed amazing control over their challengers and ultimately submitted them all. Fight after, fight, the same situation repeats itself as representatives from karate, Kung Fu, Kempo, Hapkido and other styles are taken to the ground and easily defeated. In each fight, the Jiu Jitsu fighter not only defeats his opponent but does it in dominating fashion. No other martial art has been able to produce these results in Vale Tudo or other limited rules challenge matches.
