![]() How is boxing used in Mixed Martial Arts? Many Mixed Martial Artists agree that boxing is a major element of a proper striking game for both MMA and Kickboxing competitions. Boxing is practiced throughout the world and was one of the first sports included in the Olympic games by the ancient Greeks in BC 688. Today boxing is still one of the largest and most widely practiced combat sports. It is included in the Olympics while also having its own world championshsips. The style of boxing we practice at Fusion Mixed Martial Arts in Port Jefferson Station, NY is called "Dirty Boxing" as it does not follow the traditional rules of modern day boxing. This "dirty" style incorporates punching from the clinch, elbows and takedowns, techniques which are illegal in a modern boxing event. From the clinch our MMA students are taught how to throw powerful punches to the body and head with one arm while controlling the opponents neck with his other arm. This allows the fighter to off balance his opponent while throwing powerful hooks and uppercuts, often with the intent to knockout or knockdown the attacker. In addition to learning effective punching from the clinch, our boxers learn to incorporate elbows from this "dirty boxing clinch", devastating techniques that will cut or stop an attacker quickly in either sport or self defense training. Another major difference in our dirty boxing style is the use of defensive head movement. While our boxers still learn how to slip, bob and weave, it is done in a much more subtle motion. With the addition of head kicks, knees and takedown, an MMA fighter must be very careful when lowering or moving his head to counter strikes. We practice a much more upright fighting posture to prepare for these attacks from Muay Thai and Kickboxing fighters. If you are interested in MMA training then you have most likely heard of Muay Thai or Thai Boxing. When we combine our dirty boxing techniques with Muay Thai (also known as the Science of 8 Limbs) we end up with a brand new style called "Dutch Muay Thai." This hybrid style combines effective punching of dirty boxing, the powerful striking of Kyokushin Karate and the devastating kicks, knees and elbows of Muay Thai. It is truly the worlds most effective form of striking and was pioneered by Dutch fighters in Holland! Notable Dutch Style Thai fighters include Bas Ruten, Henri Hooft and Peter Aerts. In the Summer of 2014 Fusion Mixed Martial Arts was proud to have hosted Henri Hooft in a Dutch Style Muay Thai Seminar, it was truly an honor to learn from the best!
