![]() Ricky Edwards won his MMA debut by unanimous decision at NYFE 7: High Voltage on Saturday June 6th 2015 in Jamaica Queens, NY. Before the Fight As coaches Andre & Joe were driving with Ricky to the fights, our worst fear of the day came true...Ricky's opponent did not show up to weigh-ins and would not be coming to the fight. The promoters however worked hard and found Ricky a match with another competitor who's opponent no-showed as well. Our hats off to both of these warriors who showed up to fight! On 2 hours notice the match was made, Ricky Edwards (Fusion MMA, Port Jefferson Station) vs. Garret Ross (New Way Martial Arts, Detroit) at 155lbs. The Fight From the opening bell he dictated the pace of the match with superior striking, using his Muay Thai skills to back his opponent into the cage. After establishing a dominant clinch Ricky was able to lean on and tire Garret, attacking with knees to the body and dirty boxing techniques (Coach Andre has been working with Ricky on his dirty boxing skills for this fight). In the first round Ricky scored an excellent sweep off the cage, landing in top half-guard where he attacked with hammer fists. He did an excellent job in fighting for the under-hook, creating top shoulder pressure and most importantly taking his time, not rushing in and keep a stable, top position to strike from. In addition to his excellent striking Ricky impressed us all with his wrestling ability. We have been working extensively on pummeling and wrestling for this match and it showed! Winner by Unanimous Decision We are all very proud of Ricky and his opponent for putting on an exciting match and taking their fights on only a few hours notice. Congrats Ricky on bringing the win back to Port Jefferson Station,NY! Fusion MMA & Kickboxing will be competing next at The Good Fight Grappling Tournament on July 25th, 2015. Time to hit the mats and sharpen our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills as we continue to prove to be the area's premier Mixed Martial Arts School!
