![]() How do you train for Mixed Martial Arts? MMA is a combat sport combining various martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, Sambo and Kickboxing. Fighters must be well versed in striking and grappling techniques while standing and on the ground. In addition to learning proper technique, MMA athletes are required to be in peak physical shape, requiring a mix of strength & conditioning. Lets take a look at the most dominant styles that dominate Mixed Martial Arts competitions like the UFC and Bellator. Martial Arts experts agree that there are three skill sets that students must master in order to be successful fighters. These are striking, takedowns and submissions. The most successful and popular styles include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Wrestling. (We cover all of these important martial arts and more at our Port Jefferson Station Mixed Martial Arts School). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often shortened to BJJ, specializes in submission holds. Students learn to choke, lock and sweep their opponents while on the ground or standing. Many MMA coaches agree that submission training, specifically Jiu Jitsu, is one of the most important factors in an MMA fight. Unlike striking and wrestling, Jiu Jitsu teaches submission holds that can end a fight quickly, even when a fighter is on their back. Fighters that know BJJ are dangerous from every position! Muay Thai (also known as Thai Boxing) is the striking style of choice for top MMA athletes. This martial art teaches effective kicks, punches, elbows and knee strikes. These techniques can be used from standing, the clinch and sometimes on the ground. Oftentimes fighters will supplement their Muay Thai with Western Boxing techniques (referred to as "Dutch Muay Thai" or "Dutch Kickboxing"). Wrestling is a critical skill set that MMA fighters must learn. Wrestlers practice takedowns (such as the double-leg or single-leg), throws and trips. In addition to learning to take their opponents down to the ground, good wrestling also includes takedown defense. These techniques allow a fighter to take the fight to the ground (where they can use their Jiu Jitsu training to apply a submission hold) or keep the fight standing by defending takedowns (where they can focus on Muay Thai and Boxing to dominate the fight with striking).
