![]() Are you looking for a Mixed Martial Arts Academy (MMA school) on Long Island? If so take a look at this guide to see if the dojo you're interested in passes the test! Do they have a proven grappling program? Grappling is a major component of Mixed Martial Arts training. In fact, many coaches will tell you that grappling skills are the most important aspect of an MMA fight. Look for a school that specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the worlds leading and most effective grappling art as proved in the UFC and other tournaments. In addition to Jiu Jitsu training, there should also be a large emphasis on Wrestling techniques, these allow fighters to take their opponents down to the ground (or defend themselves against their attackers take downs). Our gym specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Catch Wrestling techniques that are designed for sport and self defense training. You'll learn joint locks, choke holds, trips and throws to effectively defend yourself in any situation. Do they have a proven striking program? A proper striking program includes punching, kicking, elbows, knees and even headbutts. Our school emphasizes the art of Muay Thai (also known as Thai Boxing or the "Science of 8 Limbs"), the worlds most effective striking style. At Fusion MMA, we practice the Dutch style of Muay Thai, a combination of Thai Boxing, Western Boxing and Kyokushin Karate. As an always evolving striking style, you will also see elements of Kung Fu, Taekwondo and other martial arts. Our expert trainers use what works, teaching students to apply their techniques in competition or for self defense situations. Do they have a competitive fight team? An authentic MMA gym will have a competitive fight team. Although most of our members train for fun and self defense, we have a large and active competition team at Fusion MMA. When looking at a martial arts school, check their credentials to make sure they have full contact fights on their record (and hopefully current active fighters as well). Look for a school that has successfully competed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Kickboxing and of course MMA. Do the instructors have verified fights? The best schools will not only have active students that compete but also coaches with competition experience. Don't be afraid to ask for an instructors credentials or fight record. If the trainers haven't competed (and don't coach students that compete) chances are it is not a quality school. At Fusion MMA we pride ourselves on being the only school in Port Jefferson Station, NY with instructors and members who have fought in MMA, Vale Tudo, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (gi & No-Gi), Kickboxing and more. Do they have a proper training facility? A proper MMA gym will have the right tools to help you reach your full potential. At the very least look for a large matted space in which to safely practice techniques and sparring. In addition, a top MMA facility will have tons of heavy bags, a boxing ring or cage, a full weight room and plenty of room to train.
