Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (also known as BJJ) has taken over the world of mixed martial arts as the worlds most dominant grappling style. In fact, every fighter in the UFC, Bellator and other MMA promotions must be proficient in BJJ in order to succeed. In addition to being an integral part of modern MMA, BJJ has also proven itself the most effective style for self defense through Vale Tudo competitions.

When looking for a Jiu Jitsu school keep in mind that not all gyms are the same. Due to the popularity of MMA events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, many martial arts schools have tried to teach BJJ without being properly qualified. Always ask for proper credentials and where the instructors have trained. A quality school will have instructors that have competition experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as Mixed Martial Arts. (Fusion MMA & Kickboxing of Port Jefferson Station is the only dojo in the area to have instructors use their Jiu Jitsu in BJJ, MMA and Vale Tudo tournaments.)

Next, look for a school that emphasizes live training or "rolling". The heart of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is training against resisting opponents. A proper Jiu Jitsu class will devote at least 30 minutes or more to live training at the end of each class. Rolling is the equivalent to sparring in kickboxing and is essential to learning proper BJJ technique. A quality school will offer a safe, non-intimidating environment to train in as you progress from beginner to advanced rolling. All students should be rolling at the end of each class, including your instructor! Be careful of a school where the instructor refuses to train with students or doesn't support members competing. At Fusion MMA, we often roll for 45 minutes or longer after drilling, hour long sessions (and longer) are not uncommon!

Here are a few more tips when searching for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school:
  • Is my instructor qualified?
  • Do members compete in jiu jitsu or other grappling tournaments?
  • Have the members or coaches used their skills in MMA or Vale Tudo?
  • Do they provide a wide variety of Gi and No-Gi classes?
  • Is there plenty of live rolling after class?
